Hey there, welcome to my website. Nice to have you here. I am so excited to share my passion for the hiking, climbing, and outdoor sports world. First, let me introduce myself and give you a quick overview of my mission with this blog.
Who Am I?
My Name is Res Marty, I am 26 years old at the time of writing this text, and I currently live in beautiful Lucerne, in the heart of Switzerland. You might know Switzerland, famous for its chocolate, cheese, and Victorinox knifes, but when you visit us you will quickly realize it is also a paradise for hiking and climbing activities and much more;)
Apart from traveling the world, playing tennis and soccer, my biggest passion is hiking and camping. The great thing about living in Switzerland is that the mountains and the next hiking route are never far away. In fact, we have one best hiking trail networks in the world. To give you an idea, we have more than 65’000 kilometers (40’398 miles) of hiking trails. Considering the small size of Switzerland, this is really enormous! Under these circumstances, it is probably no wonder have developed a passion for hiking at a very early age.
How It All Started
Starting at a young age, my first hikes have been day trips in Switzerland; soon enough, I started to do multiple days on vacations and on weekends. My first multiple-day hiking tour was completing the Via Splügen-trail with a total ascent of 3300meters (10826ft) and a descent of 3700 meters (2296ft) in four days. I remember well how exhausted I felt and, simultaneously, absolutely mind-blown by the beauty of nature and the scenic views underway! In addition, sitting on a campfire in the evenings, watching the stars, and camping in the wilderness is something I found to give me a very a lot of energy and motivation in my everyday life.
My Best Hikes So Far
I have been lucky enough to travel the world quite a bit on my holidays and thanks to my previous job as a flight attendant before. I really consider this a privilege I am very thankful for. I have been able to hike in many countries, including the ones in the list below and some more:
- United States
- Costa Rica
- Sri Lanka
As you probably can imagine, it is not easy for me to name the highlights. Nevertheless, I decided to list a few very memorable hikes for me personally so that you can get a clearer picture of me. Therefore, on my blog, I am giving you a list of the best hikes and camping per country or region, even though I am aware that I am probably missing out on a few outstanding ones:).
Similar to Switzerland, Canada offers countless hiking trails. I have been able to discover this beautiful country, both by car and on hikes. To name the highlights would fill an entire blog post but, the most memorable hikes I personally had are all in Jasper National Park and Banff National Park. Endless forests and crystal clear mountain lakes awaiting you here.
One of my favorite hikes is the Kalalau Trail on the Island of Kauai. The trails offer different variations, which are doable in 1-2 days with a medium to hard difficulty level. The highlight of it is, without a doubt, the incredible views of the Na Pali Coast, but the scenes in the mountains and valleys are a highlight as well. Alternative hiking trails in Hawaii are the trails in Kokee State park near the Waimea Canyon.
As with Canada above, it would be impossible (and quite unfair) to name just one tour, but very memorable to me are the Pine city Trail in Joshua Tree National Park and the Lake Helen Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park.
This country is an absolute hikers paradise and quite underestimated, in my opinion. There are multiple hiking tours that I will never forget. For example, the tour starting from Cusco to the colorful rainbow mountain. However, the unquestionable highlight for me is, without a doubt, the 4-days Inca trail. It is admittingly the most popular hike in Peru, and you will have to organize permits and guides months in advance. Still, the beauty and history are incomparable to any other tour. And seeing one of the seven ancient wonders of the world is well worth the organization.
The island of Madeira is called the island of flowers and is situated in the Atlantic Ocean, around 550 kilometers (341 miles) from mainland Portugal. It is the Island where Cristiano Ronaldo was born and raised and the locals are very proud of that. Madeira offers incredible hiking opportunities with fantastic views and very unique flora and fauna. The tour we accomplished is a relatively easy hike along the spectacular shoreline from with starting and ending point of the tour in Paia d’Abra.
